So different than the red foxes I see here...these look more dog-like to me.

Agreed! The head/face, especially, is shaped more like a dog.

Foxes are a branch of the dog family.

I've always wondered why young foxes are called kits instead of pups.

Just looked that up, pixi, and struck out. I know the female is called a vixen, but nothing on the kits. Maybe you'll have better luck.

The foxes don't want to claim them, though.

One species of fox is called a kit fox and is small so maybe calling young foxes "kits" came from that. Here are some interesting facts.
The grey fox is the only dog that can climb trees.
Foxes have retractable claws like cats.
Foxes have vertical pupils like cats.
Foxes eat anything.

Apparently you have quite a choice of names for foxes...
Male foxes are known as dogs, tods or reynards, females as vixens, and young as cubs, pups, or kits. A group of foxes is referred to as a skulk, leash, or earth. A baby fox is called fox cub or fox pup.

Wow pixi--what a wealth of facts! Thanks for info. I am a bit confused, however. I thought dogs were descendants of coyotes

Or even wolves!

Don't know about who came first--the fox or the wolf or the coyote--probably hyenas also. But the domestic dog came last. They're all related tho.

Pixipixill - they may have some things like cats, but one the eating everything, cats can be really picky about their food. What they eat today don't try it the next day!

We have had lots of cats. One of mine like spaghetti and cantaloupe but not fish!

Oh, jas6415, what a shame! We've seen them up there and even here in Anchorage. They're really beautiful in the winter colors.

Isn't their fur white in the winter or when they are trying to eat leftover Polar bear killings? Or are there dif. colors??? I am curious to know!

The coat turns white for winter as a camouflage against the snow. This picture was taken either in late fall or early spring.

I've been to Alaska - ended up getting sick with an upper respitory bug. A woman gave it to the staff abroad a cruise - she was a passenger the week before us. Our group watched a bubble feeding from a humpback whale. I was sick and now wish I saw it.

What a beautiful, soft looking coat it has. I would love to snuggle up and lay my cheek against it like I would my dog but I don't think it would be quite as receptive.

God bless you all.

Looks like he is transitioning from winter to warmer coat.
