My cactus like this bloomed twice this year. Had one bloom in June & now had 3 at one time. They only last one day. Seems ashame they don't last longer. they are so beautiful.
Article in Wikipedia says that some of these cacti are called "killer cacti" because eating the pulp or drinking the water will kill you; however, the article at http://www.desertusa.com/mag99/june/papr/barrelcactus.html says different. Suppose it depends on which type of barrel cactus. The People knew how to utilize the plant to its fullest: food, candy, spines used for needles and awls, and body of plant itself scooped out and used for cooking.
