Morning to all. Lovely dresses. Never got to wear one like that, I made my own dress. It turned out really well, just didn't have the money to buy one, besides the day wasn't about the dress. It was about love and our vows, not what we were wearing. You all take care and be safe.

I made my own and since I went to fashion school I didn't feel it was the least inferior to any of these. I also made both bridesmaids gowns and the maid of honor's. Not any tux tho. That is beyond me.
We could not afford much and had a back yard reception. His brothers owned a night club then and supplied the booze. His sister made a baked ham and I made the cake. His nephew was a talented musician and supplied entertainment. We had a blast. Just the material/trim for my dress cost $80 and I bought the cheap lace and used embroidered cotton beneath it...and that was in 1971. I can't imagine the price of a gown today. Having beautiful dresses was and still is important to me...but my husband is anti-fashion and hardly has any clothing. Like you, darambo, he puts all that down. Oh well all you saints have to help us sinners get past our needs so we can get into heaven also. I'm a tough case I'm afraid.

My sister made my dress, her dress and the flower girls dress. She also did the flowers and made wedding cake shaped cookies for party favors! I would never spend the amount of money on a dress that they want, my whole wedding was probably less than the price of one of these dresses!

I never did either darambo. My first wedding to my husband I wore a pink top with black dress pants. The second time, our renewal, I wore a white long eyelet skirt with a white tank top under a lace top. It was a semi-formal. After 41years, I am not doing it again.

I made my satin floor length dress & veil (it had beads around it). I was very happy it came out so nice, still have it in storage. If the marriage had come out as well, but the second marriage has been great, it has lasted, we may make it to our 50th yet!!!

I always dreamed of a "princess" wedding dress, but when the time came I was practical and chose a simple tea length dress I could wear on other occasions.

Surprised so many of you made your own dresses also. My parents would have gladly paid for my dress and a wedding, but I didn't want them to waste all that money, after all I still had 5 siblings at home. I really enjoyed making my dress, it made it more special to me. My dress was white eyelet with small multi colored bunches of embroidered flowers. I fell in love with the fabric when I saw it. It was a long dress, but more on the casual side. We eloped and my mother was so disappointed, she wanted us to have a small wedding. My grandparents were our witnesses. Pixi I don't put all that down....it's great for others who want and can afford it, it just wasn't for me or what I wanted. Mamag I'm with you. We just had our 45th and I wouldn't do it again either. Can you believe what these gowns and weddings cost now??? It's insane to go into debt for a wedding whether it's the bride and groom or the parents. Dbnc a blue suit would have been very nice. Everyone be safe.

Your dress sounds lovely. I agree about spending so much on a wedding. The money saved could go so far in setting up a new household.

Hi darambo. You did the right thing. No point putting anyone in debt. Your parents seemed lovely and deserved a considerate daughter like you. You can look back without regrets.

Pixi how long did it take you to make all the dresses? Must of have a lot of work. I bet your dresses were very pretty with your experience. I sew quite a bit, Mom taught me, but I don't know about making other dresses...besides my own. You are very brave to even a tempt it. Be safe.

KarenBuglet when we came back from eloping my Mom had taken the money she would have spent and bought us all our kitchen supplies from dishes and silverware to pots and pans. Everything was wrapped and covered the top of our bed. Just made me break down and cry. Was so much more appreciated then a big party. Still have the canisters that went with the set 45 years later. Loved my parents so much, must be where my practical side comes from. Be safe and take care.

I think my husband proposed in June and we got married the end of August so a couple of months.
I was finishing college then (maybe taking two courses during the summer)so I had more time than if I had a job. In fashion school you learn to make your own patterns and therefore can design whatever you want. The wedding was blue and white from my white lace with forget-me-nots over ice blue to sky blue bridesmaids and turquoise for the maid of honor with a lighter blue lace over dress that was open in the front from under the bodice down and had short puff sleeves. I wanted my maid of honor to be able to use her gown for other events so without the cape it would have looked like an evening gown to wear out on a cruise. I don't know if she ever used it again. One of my bridesmaids got to use hers again as a maid of honor at another wedding.

Pixi the dresses all sound absolutely beautiful and you should be very proud of them. Do you still have your dress? Recently sent mine off to secondhand store, no daughters to save it for. Someone else might get some use out of it, but I'm sure it's out of style after 45 years. Ladies I have to tell you all your dresses sound beautiful and I think we should all be proud of ourselves for making the right decisions for our own selves. You all be safe.

Thanks, Darambo. No I still have it. I had a bra sewn in that had foam rubber in it and the bra and elastic are caput. I'd need to get another or do some kind of work on the dress before giving it away. I don't remember why I did that as the dress has no plunging necklines. It wasn't at all sexy like today's dresses.

I made my veil - 5 yds. of 100"-wide lace, gathered onto a 6" flat bow. 2 yds of the lace fell back over the veil and all the edges were scalloped. Had beautiful shot-silver brocade to make the dress, but a gas water heater exploded on my right hand and arm. Second & third degree burns meant no sewing, which could irritate the new skin. Wound up borrowing my cousin's dress, which was of a similar style. I later made the material into a knee-length cocktail dress with matching coat, very simple lines. Think the gas explosion was an omen - the marriage sure didn't last!

Pixi, your dresses sound beautiful! This is a talented group, isn't it?

Oh aknan how awful. So sorry about the burns and the marriage breakup. Your gown sounds awesome. At least you were able to slavage the material. You probably got more use out of it than if it had been your wedding gown.
Yes this is a very talented bunch.

Wow Akan an explosion, your guardian angel must have been on your shoulder!! I bet the dress and coat you made from that fabric was very pretty...I like simple lines much better. Your veil sounds pretty, like the scalloped edge...it's different. It's ok that the first didn't work...mine didn't either. I was 16 when I left home, lied about my age and got married..lasted 3 years. Wanted to leave home and it was my way out to see the real world?? WHAT A MISTAKE!!! Sometimes I feel like I have been married all my life lol!! Be safe.

Darambo, the veil was lovely, but it almost broke my neck when I looked up! Quite heavy. I'm in my third marriage of 38 years in Feb. The first lasted legally (I left & toured all over Europe) for 4 years; the second was 6 and then I met my Dearly Beloved; I'm his 4th wife. We just had to practice until we got it right!

Akan sometime it takes practice lol!! My mother in law has been married 6 times. I always laugh when she tries to give me marriage advice!! Wow you got to see Europe, I was in Germany for a year....first husband got drafted, he was an MP in Frankfurt. I only got to see Germany. Be safe.

Good Afternoon! I got busy and just now was able to get on the computer and do the jigsaw! Nice puzzle, but I am not bit on expensive white dresses that are only worn once. Just me, and I know I'm a minority on this subject! Blessings to all!

I also belong to your minority, the price of some of these dresses would be a deposit for a home.

You aren't alone. My wedding dress was a sheath dress to knee length, cream. It had a jacket to it. Very wearable for the office. Blessings right back atcha!

I agree with you nborchardt. When my hubby and I got married I wore my best pair of jeans and a white silk shirt. Maybe a little too 'relaxed' for some but was good for us.

Jan 4, 2019
No, nborchardt, you're not a minority. I think far too much money is wasted on the trappings of marriage instead of the "meat" of it - and don't get me started on funerals! Personally, my Dearly Beloved and I eloped!

The leg seems to have decided to heal, I will believe it when the dressing are off for good and I can see that it is doing what it should do. The hardest thing is to believe that it will not come back (Oh ye of little faith ) I pray that you had a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Perhaps because 2018 was a British royal wedding year ---- I'm thinking the royal family does well in choices for wedding gowns.

Loved this puzzle. I LOVE clothes, especially shoes. Not so much other accessories like pocket books. Would like more puzzles with clothes.
Wishing you all new horizons to explore.
