The medieval House De Haar dates from the 13th century. Famous guests included Coco Chanel, Maria Callas, Gregory Peck, Roger Moore, Yves Saint Laurent, Joan Collins, and Brigitte Bardot. The park and gardens surrounding De Haar Castle cover over 135 acres of land.

I have been in three castles -- Hammond's Castle, Casa Loma and
the Castle on Heart Island. The last two were lovely but the first was claustrophobic and depressing although it was in a gorgeous spot with wonderful gardens. This castle looks well kept but I would have liked a garden or some landscaping to set it off.
It is astounding how these places were built before the industrial age. I like the turrets and touches of color.
Wishing you all a home you love...even if it is only an apartment.

Hammond Castle looks like it would make an excellent setting for a ghost movie.

I have have been in the Hohensalzburg Castle or Fortress in Salzburg, Austria. It's supposedly one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. Part of it was still in use in the early 1990's with a restaurant with a great view of Salzburg. One thing that I found interesting was how low the doorways were and how small the beds were. The people living there when it was built, were probably about 5 foot tall. The earliest part of the castle was built in the 11th century.

I've also been in the summer palace of the Hofburg's, the Schonbrunn Palace - a 1441 room palace - the tour shows you a few of the rooms, there's a zoo. It was where John F. Kennedy met Nikita Khrushchev in 1961.

What surprised me abuot the Hammond Castle was th terribly narrow spiral stair that led to some of the bedrooms. The inside--even the great hall that was quite large, was very dark and dismal.

JamieT, people in the Middle Ages up to the early 1900s slept in a more upright position than we do today. That's why the beds look shorter. Doorways were lower to provide more strength for the walls and ceilings, especially in the early centuries of castle building. People were shorter then, too - an average height for a man was about 5'5" or 5'6".

Hi,

There is another C4J puzzle of this Castle that gives a different view and aspect of it. To my mind, it is the better picture.

It's an interesting castle - when I was in Amsterdam, I didn't stay in a castle, but a hotel that used to be a prime minister's home in the early 1700's.
