My parents, like so many other young couples, had a dog before the baby (me! ). One day when the mailman and my soon-to-be-mother were chatting, he said, "Mrs. M., I'm concerned about your dog and the baby. He is now the king-pin of the family and I hope that doesn't present a problem of jealousy of the baby." He meant well.
After I was born and my mother put me on the porch in the carriage for a nap, the mailman arrived and Teddy was under the carriage and made a gentle growl! The mailman rang the bell and said to my mother, "We needn't have worried, Teddy is taking good care of his sister! "
Large dogs are deemed dangerous to small children because small children are crawling around on the floor or ground. The dog, which is a natural hunter, sees the child as prey at attacks. They don't realize that they are attacking a human child, not a large rabbit. It's all in the training.
So true. A child need to learn how to approach a dog. With hand cupped & under his mussle so the dog can smell if they are dangerous. Hand over the head can seem dangerous to a dog.
Sharon Darlene, It is all how they are raised & treated. They are loving dogs. I had to put a thourabred down because he attacked the farm animals. He had been in a cage for 6 months.
When I was a kid our neighbor had two Chows, who loved everyone they met. We were small and not allowed to play with them if they ran free because they are a fairly big dog, but if they were on a leash they would lap us half to death with their purple tongues, and we loved them and they loved us, too.
