We have never been anyplace tropical. Maybe next year we could try it. It's scary to leave the country these days amd Hawaii is so very long a trip. I don't like just flat sand and water. Hmm. Not being an ocean swimming fan, just beach unless there are dunes and shells to collect seems to me to be a boring time after a couple of days. Any suggestions?
Wishing you all relief from heat and cold.
I love Jamaica. It's never boring even if you don't swim in the ocean and there are plenty hotels with pools.

I agree, pixi, too much of a good thing gets boring. If I could walk the beach to "forever" and explore the different trees and ocean colors, that would go a long way towards making it more interesting. A couple hours with a book on a beach would be about all I could take. Short attention span?

Never boring pixi, this is one the Lord gave me in 1988 and nothing has changed
LISTENING TO THE WAVES
Listening to the sounds
of the wave's watery, froth tipped fingers
Surging to and fro
Washing the sand and
Leaving shadowy lines in their wake.
As the tide lifts the water skywards
There is a momentary pause
Before it crashes down, touches the shore
And recedes back into the ocean once more,
Drawn by some invisible hand
Without the strength to hold it in place.
A lone gull plundering the sand
for the night's spoils
Spreads it's pale grey wings
as though to take flight
flexing against the brisk sea breeze.
Walks on short stilted legs
towards the water's edge
Then utters a mournful cry as though lamenting
a lost love.
Coarse yellow sand
The grains of which in even a handful
cannot be counted
Flecked with shells, small sand-smoothed rocks
broken coral and seaweed with its pungent smell
in abundant, never ending supply.
The fresh sea air
brings new life
into tired lungs.
The sounds of the surf
Echoing time and time again
Peacefully drowning out
the sounds of every day living
Peace and tranquility abounds
a soothing sound to tired and weary souls.
And then once more
it is time to go.....
Reality awaits
Easier to face with renewed strength
Both in body and soul
From this precious time spent
Listening to the waves.

Where do you live pixipixil? What about a cruise that would go to different places, where you could go on excursions?

Don't get me wrong, I love the beach and agree with every word of your poem, aussie. It's the "sitting there with a book" part that I would find boring. Walking the beach, splashing in the waves, looking for "treasures", - that I could do for days and weeks and months and...nlb

That's one of your best poems so far, Aussie. I especially like the part about the hand without strength to hold the wave back. You see, you are near enough to find that as a wondeful break in an otherwise busy routine, but suppose there was absolutely nothing else to do but sit there on a flat beach. Eventhough waves are one of my favorite things, I can only stand to watch them for an hour or so and then I need other things. Like nlb and I say, a dune or two with shells and private nooks to explore is what I have to have to complement the rhythm of the ocean and the planar shore.

Aussie, I felt like I was there with you at the beach! That's hard to imagine having lived in the desert for the last 30 years. But you took me there. Thank you. Just beautiful. May I send this to a friend? She gets away to the beach every chance she gets (2-3 times a year) and I know she would love this as much as I do.

Isn't it funny how God sends someone with just the right words or smile or a song...just when we need it most? Not funny haha, but funny hmmm. He's good to us. Hugs back

Very tired tonight, started off with a blood test and the woman was very inept who did it. Hope I don't get her again. Will be glad to hit the sack tonight!! Take care and God bless. Hugs.

Aussie, I'm so sorry you had to deal with someone who couldn't do their job right. It's upsetting when you're already sick enough to have to have a blood test. Is it possible to ask for another tech if you need to go in again? At least now, if you have to have her, you will know HOW to pray for her and yourself! :) I hope you have sweet sleep, and feel better upon awakening. I can almost see you all curled up in the palm of God's hand. He's got this! He's got YOU. Sweet hugs

Yes, she managed to leave a lovely bruise where the needle went in and if it looks like I will get her again I will ask for another technician. Unfortunately this is a three monthly blood glucose test which is ongoing. I had a bad tech once before who brought my up up in a big lump and I went back to show them what she had done, but they just sloughed it off, but from then on I asked not to have her do it. Then one day I just prayed about it and tried to befriend her which was much better. Then she retired and this other one has taken over lol. I think God is trying to teach me a lesson!!!! Take care and God bless you rahrah.

Inept needle-handlers at the worst, aussie! I swear the one who gave me my flu shot just put the vaccine on the end of a spear point and threw it at my arm from across the room! Hurt for a long time, too.

Ouch! Never have problems with flu shots, but my veins in the middle of my arm are hard to find, but a good technician has no problems - she was not one of them. Hugs.

I had a bad experience once getting my A1C test, the tech had to prick my finger (which I do daily) and it hurt for days! I think she hit a nerve. Like you, I told her superior and it was basically ignored. I watched out for her from then on tho! lol I told the doctor from now on I'd bring my own tools and do it myself.

How about a Caribbean cruise, pixipixil? They stop at a private island for a day --- and other islands along the way.

I once got on a cruise ship to wish my godparents bon voyage. It was totally claustrophobic. While I love seeing the ocean, being at its mercy (as on any ship however huge) is another story. I have taken ferries and the short trip of an hour or two is about all I can take. The chances of being caught in a storm are negligible. If we ever go to the Carribean I will choose an island with some mountains and other features...and we'll fly which I only hate a bit less than a ship. Jamaica has a wonderful botanical garden. Puerto Rico also looked beautiful before the hurricanes ruined it.
Our last vacation was to Olympic Park which had really fascinating beaches with sea stacks and tidal pools and rivers. I got to do one pastel of Rialto Beach but the lighting was not good that day. I also did one of Ocean Shores which had dunes but there were no shells to be had. They were all crushed by the waves. I did a pastel there of an overcast, flat beach with a piece of driftwood. I was surprised it came out really good in spite of the fact I thought the subject a bit thin.
I had set off to do Ruby Beach but it started raining so I had to turn back. By the time it cleared I only had time to do the beach in back of out hotel--which was separated from it by about a quarter mile of scrub and dunes. The first day I couldn't wait to see the beach and took off on one of the paths in back of the hotel. I was quickly encapsulated by the scrub bushes and got very worried as I kept trudging down a winding path with various branch-offs whether I'd ever see daylight again. I finally emerged and traversed a dune to get a view of where the beach might be.
If I had been attacked on that path nobody would ever have found me. I never went that way again.
Loved this picture. Just imagine being able to walk through the waves as they gently wash against the sand.
Sorry I haven't been posting much. I'm going through a depressive episode that has me OK one moment and few days later, I'm down. Dealing with it to the best of my ability. And meds!
I have gone through episodes of depression my self and the best thing is to just take the time to relax and not worry about anything or anybody but yourself. :-)
Hi Globug, I was here just very tired and didn't post a comment. No we were not affected by the cyclone in Vanuatu, it is 1925 kms or 1197 miles from here. Thanks for your care and concern. Hugs.

We all pray that those in or near the Vanuatu cyclone do not have too difficult of a time.
Don't think I've seen your name before. Have you been on C4J long? It's a wonderful site.
