I think the first piece of plastic I encountered was with the WWII butter substitute which came in a heavy, clear, plastic pouch. It was a big glob of white stuff with an orange button (looked like a pill). You crushed the button and orangish dye came out of it. You kneaded the pouch until the dye was incorporated into the glob. Presto, you had "butter! " I was in the third grade (1943? ) and my mother put me in charge of the kneading. I felt very responsible!

I was born after the butter substitute, but my Mom told me all about it. My childhood was rife with plastic. I know it's really bad for the planet, but it is also very handy.
One of the best kids' building toys ever. I wonder why they don't have more shapes--trapezoids, cylinders, and arcs would allow for more smooth curved surfaces. And a few more colors would be nice also. I've never been to the Lego museum. Has anyone gone?
