I used to love what they called picture hats--really big brims. They look so glamorous. I have one in black and wore it to church. The priest made me take it off. That's when I was up front leading the singing. That priest was hard to please but at least he let me keep working. The charming, handsome young one that replaced him after he died is the one who showed me the door. As the Bible says, "Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting."
May you have a place where you can be who you are and still be loved.
I remember my first picture hat....really big black hat with a large white flower tipping over the right side of the hat and a bit of black netting.........I felt very elegant. But my elegant days are far gone......sigh.

We had a parishioner years ago and, those of us who arrived early could hardly wait to see what new hat she might be wearing as she arrived. She was from a rather elite family; and the children were always dressed beautifully, of course. Personally, I'm glad we've done away with the hats in church.

I am, too. But I am sad that we also have done away with dressing nicely. Mostly folks come in as if they were interrupting a backyard bbq or just got finished cleaning the house.
These hats look like you'll need to use a hat pin (if anyone still has those) because these hats could easily blow off of your head with a slight breeze.
How do hat pins work?? I know they don't pin directly into your head but what keeps them from just sliding out of your hair underneath the hat and then the hat blowing off??

You catch a bit of hair with the pin.

When hat pins were in vogue, hairstyles were very "poofy" which allowed for enough tangled hair to securely hold a hat in place with a decorative pin, while not mussing the hair when removed.

Thanks - I had no idea how they worked. I just remember one of my aunts having several that looked pretty dangerous.

Actually, if the hat fits correctly, it will fit snugly on the forehead and will not blow away.
