The right time of year to plant those pretty flowers. Not me though...I pay my landscaper to do it now. Fingernails stay prettier that way and my back can't take bending over anymore. Could never stand to wear gardening gloves anyway!
Just got thru taking some plants out of the ground--not good- looking any more. I have some guys coming Monday to help with yard work--pulling weeds, etc. They do everything but cut grass. I have someone else do that, even tho I pay for our association to do it. I prefer having better looking grass--which I have!
I love to work in the garden although my body complains more each year. It's too early to plant much yet other than onions and potatoes although I see brave folks buying plants. I'll wait a little while more. I am getting asparagus and will plant lettuce this weekend. Our weeping cherry tree got hit by the cold this year. It was the first time and I was disappointed as this Spring will probably be my last for gardening. I am planning to move to a smaller home but I will miss it terribly. I love my plants and trees, but especially my flowers. I have amended my clay soil and have a large English garden and love every phase of it. Enjoy life.
Right about the dirt. Looks more like coffee grinds. Where are all the rocks?

Haha! I wish I had soil like this. I always joke that I grow rocks, they keep coming up in my adobe like soil. UGH!

Our raised garden beds are similar to this, they are never walked in and mixed with lots of compost, vermiculite, peat and garden soil. They are set so we can work from the outside of the garden areas. They are easy to weed and plant. We have soaker hoses in all that we use.

Neither does my ground. The trees have not received word that it's Spring either. Still bear and no buds. I think the ice storm in December did a number on them so they have to bounce back now.

Hi Catlady. My parents had the soaker hoses and one raised veggie bed in AZ. Hardpan, not rocks so like you all the soil was from the garden store.
I have to add stuff to our clay soil each year. But the rocks and weeds abide no matter what. Even the planter tubs get weed choked.

We use the square foot garden method, works really great with our red clay soil & variable weather. Got the book from my day...but also found it at the Library - "Square Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew - lots of good information.

I LOVE square foot garden method! Besides my soil problem I have a bit of a dog problem, so I have to block off my north 40 to start a garden again. They dig up anything I plant and my great dane can wet anything 3 feet or shorter. hehe. I used to have a wonderful rotating compost method but my Newfoundland decided to start climbing up on it and add his own contributions. Oh well can't use it now. I will not give up! Starting new.

Nice to know. I have a few books. One is Crockett's Victory Garden but I never got into doing things right. I see a plant I fall in love with and out comes some more lawn. I'm scaling back this year and putting the lawn back.

We live in a townhouse so barely any lawn to speak of and if we chose to plant anything, it might not be safe from the landscape company that comes in regularly. I think that's about the only thing that I miss living here but I've adjusted. Maybe a good thing as I've lost the touch in getting anything to survive lol

If you told me 5 years ago I would not miss having a cat I would not hve believed you, but in fact it is now a relief to have one less burden to worry about. Tho I will always love cats I am glad not to be reponsible for one. I imagine it's like that for you and gardening, Taffi.

You got it in one. We used to have 2 cats but the eldest one died. I would like to have a second cat but hubby has said no. I guess it's one of the things when you get attached to a pet and then have to say goodbye. He was so attached to Boo. And yeah, I miss my great cuddler too.

Seven cats own me & I am so tired of it. I love cats but putting up with them & cleaning up is getting harder all the time. I make them stay outside unless it is raining or cold.
