Oh my goodness, I am putting on weight just looking at all this Christmas fare lol.
"People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas." unknown
"A turkey never voted for an early Christmas." Irish Proverb
God bless the Irish and their wonderful sense of humour. God bless everyone else as well. take care. Hugs.
I hear you--these pictures are not helpful--but boy they look good! Now if I can learn to be satisfied with just pictures of goodies...

I didn't know there were turkeys in Ireland, but, apparently, there were attempts to have wild turkeys in Great Britain and Ireland, but, because of poaching and a lack of places for them to spend the winter, they didn't last very long.
Apparently, the way that turkeys got the name was because the turkeys that came to Britain were coming from that area via Spain.
My wondering about why there would be an Irish proverb about a bird native to North America, caused me to learn a bit about turkey. Thanks for sharing!

I like the unknown saying. I'll agree that the Irish do have a good sense of humor. But when you mix the Irish with German, boy oh boy does that make for a temper. tee hee. Grammy hugs to one and all.

Thanks, JamieT. I was just wondering how they got "turkey" from the Mexican "guajolote." LOL You can tell the old mexican name is onomotopoeia, but where did the Spanish get "pavo"?
These days "pavo" is also used to refer to adolescents who are in the silly, loud "look at me" phase.

'Pavo' is Latin for peacock. Spanish uses the term for both birds, but what we call a peacock is a 'pavo real' (royal turkey) as opposed to your ordinary, run-of the-mill 'pavo'.

Ah! Thank you. I used to be a translator/interpreter. Things like that keep me awake nights.

Oh wow! A translator - wonder in what language. My sister is bilingual herself - she speaks English an French.

I worked with Spanish and English. I do speak and read French, but the spelling is beyond me. Tried Russian and gave up--couldn't learn to read it. Have a nodding acquaintance with Italian, and botanical/liturgical Latin (but only the set phrases, mind.) Round our house we say I'm incoherent in three languages!
Or as a friend texted me last night, "I'm losing my mind, but as long as I know when I need to pee, I'm OK! "

Orinoco, loved your friend's saying! All of my friends area getting up in years, too; I think I'll pass it along to them!
Very pretty. Getting hungry. Leaving for Thanksgiving dinner in 30 minutes so am wasting time now. Going to a fancy restaurant! Glad I'm not paying. Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it.
