If that pond was in the southeastern US it would have a gator living in it.

If in the northeast there'd be mosquitoes, midges and black flies. No matter where you'd be needing galoshes. I prefer it as a picture. All the beauty and none of the discomfort...guess I've gotten old.

Oh yes it would! :)) We have new neighbors across the street from us. Don't know where there from, but they were surprised there were gators in that "lake", which is connected with the Weeki Wachee reserve. Well, we're right at the edge of the reserve. All kinds of wild animals all around us. They didn't ask questions before they bought their house. Now they are sorry they bought their house with wild animals in their backyard.

We have lots of wildlife here in Florida; gators, opossums, raccoons, turtles, tortoises, frogs, toads, deer, bear, Florida panthers, all kinds of fish and zillions of birds. Did I leave anything out tomandray?

Oh, I did forget the new "pest" of the Everglades - pythons and, more recently, anacondas, Green iguanas and Nile monitor lizards. People in south Florida buy these creatures as "pets" and then let them go in the Everglades when they get tired of them.

Yeah there are also constrictors as well. Regarding the pets and going into the Everglades - many of them get close. Keeping some of these animals as pets is deadly monitor lizards and pythons. Then we have the Cane toad situation. Those aren't kept as pets but are just as lethal - to small dogs. Dogs can die within 30-45 min. after coming in contact with that type of toad. One day I was quite sadden to learn what had happpened to a landscaper in Sanibel. Many of the residents complain - about the gators.

Happy 4th of July, trynfindit and all the puzzlers. RE: wildlife, the gopher turtle we had as a resident at our house, has come back, but to my new neighbor's house. It dug a nice nest underneath the house. It will be there until Sept. then leave. That hole will have to be filled in again to protect the house. :)) It is always something with all the wildlife around here. This year we have a terrible problem with the "no see ums". Have you had that problem. They're biting like crazy. Bites all over my legs. :(

Not yet, June was the driest we have had since they have been keeping records. But we don't have any standing water, also sometimes the city sprays late night, too. We did get about 1" rain last nite, but no puddles this morning, even on the patio or street.

In our area the 'no see ums' can't get through the mosquitoes.

There was one town where I used to live that had these huge flies. They were called lake flies. Then my dad told me a story about when he was in St. Lucia - the residents were saying omg! whadda we going to do. He inquiries what they were referring to - locusts were coming.

In the Northwest, a person would probably find lots of insects---like black flies, etc. We've been starting to be attacked by swarms of black flies lately here in the Spokane, WA and surrounding area due to all the extra rain we had this winter. We're advised to wear LIGHT clothing for long pants and pull-overs, plus a LIGHT-colored cap. Plus, there are lotions or sprays, with or without DEET, to protect you from the tiny black flies. They advise us to stay away from flowing water or rivulets. They operate mainly at DAWN(sunrise), and at DUSK(sunset). Avoid perfumes or colognes when going outside.

Sounds a lot like New Hampshire to me. I used to live there. Had to spray ourselves down before going out. Springtime was the worst. Then came summer and those huge mosquitoes and horse flies. We spend most of the summer with bites all over. It was horrible! :( We've been living in FL for the past 23 years. So much better, no black flies. We do have alligators, down the street. :) It's always something...we're just careful when we go outside.

Lovely little country scene - good place for a picnic and cooling off the feet.

My condolences to carolsapple I know the feeling! The remaining few family that I have does not communicate to me. Holydays and birthdays cards now and then. Leaves a lot of room for emptiness.

Quite true - I'll never forget an uncle who used to call me sprite. Then I had a grannie - very outspoken and wasn't afraid to tell people her opinion. They often asked her how she was doing? At a restaurant or hotel is where she expressed her assertiveness. She knew what she wanted - she'd book a reservation and request a pleasant view. They'd put her next to the kitchen at a restaurant. A hotel they'd put her over looking the parking lot. She told one mgr. that she was moving her belongings to another hotel. Very hilarious lady as well!
