Just had to google and find out what difference a single o could make in a cookie. Here is what I found:
"A macaron or French macaroon is a sweet meringue-based confection made with egg white, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond powder or ground almond, and food coloring. There is some variation in whether the term macaron or macaroon is used, and the related coconut macaroon is often confused with the macaron." Wikipedia
"A macaroon is a small biscuit/cookie, typically made from ground almonds, coconut, and/or other nuts or even potato, with sugar and sometimes flavorings, food coloring, glace cherries, jam and/or a chocolate coating. Some recipes call for sweetened condensed milk." Wikipedia
Our Publix grocery store recently started carrying these and I bought one since I've always wanted to try one. I got a lemon flavored one. It was tasty, but not worth the price in my opinion - $2.00 for one cookie which is about the size of two stacked Oreos.
I don't know why, but whenever I see pictures of these cookies I just can't think they would taste good. They are very pretty and make a nice picture but I don't want to reach out and grab one.
I thought was interesting when comparing "macarons" to "macaroons." Fancy French macarons are light meringue cookies made with almond meal. You can color them with pastel shades and fill them will all kinds of fillings such as buttercream, ganache, or jam...Macaron is the French word for macaroon, but are never the coconut-based cookie. Macarons are one of the most amazing pastries, with hundreds of flavors and fillings.
