Actually, these are the fruits of the prickly pear cactus, elijah13. They're used for jellies, syrups and candy. Can be eaten raw if you very carefully remove the spines. They're sharp, tiny and tricky to get out of your skin.

They are very beautiful. Mine are in bloom now. Big yellow flowers that look somewhat like a rose.
I Googled this and yes indeed, it is edible. In fact, there are 3 parts of the plant that you can eat! But you have to wear gloves while preparing it!!!!
