It has a similar pigeon body type as the pigeons of the Northeastern US. However, it is much more regal looking. When I worked in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, my lunch hour included luring the local pigeons with wheat bread during our lunch breaks on the park bench. If there were none around at the end of lunch, just whistling and waving your arms at one high flying pigeon would draw 20 to feed before we had to get back to work.
I've never heard of this one, either. We have bluish purple ones in my area. They're noisy when they coo, too. Their doo-doo is toxic, and there are precautions to take when you are cleaning your balcony or a patio. Use a face mask, as well.
Watching TV one day when this pigeon started coo cooing and I was having difficulty hearing the TV. Went outside and couldn't see the pigeon, so hit a bush just outside my front door and out it flew. On further investigation, found it was nesting in there - I was mortified having deprived this poor pigeon of a future home for its little ones :(
So you scared it away permanently? It never came back? It would have been a noisy neighbor for sure. We have many of them around the mobile home park where I live and they get very noisy at times.

This is a beautiful bird, nothing like the pigeons we have around here. We have mostly quaill, my hubby has a quaill call and he calls to them and they come into the yard. Love it in the spring when their babies are following them, they are so sweet. Australia has such diverse animal life, I just love to see a new one that I haven't seen before, like this pigeon. Everyone stay safe.

Darambo, we have a butterfly house on the island started by an ex farmer who retired. On the floor in the house are those cute little quail and love to see them scurrying in and out, especially as you say with their little ones in tow. The man who started it is in the process of building a bigger and better butterfly house which will be three times as big as the current one. I am looking forward to its completion when you can go and sit in the house with all the butterflies in there and they actually land on you. There are so many beautiful and varied butterflies. Most enjoyable. Hugs.

Aussie - Found this online:
Pigeon pairs are monogamous, often breeding in consecutive seasons for as long as both birds of a pair live. Most will attempt to raise several broods each year.

Aussie would truly love to sit in a butterfly houses and have them land on me. What a wonderful feeling to feel their light touch. We have a lot of butterflies here. Trynfindit thanks for the info, didn't know they were monogamous or that they could raise more than one brood a year how interesting. be safe

Butterfly houses are just marvelous! There's a very good one in Denver. We visited it - very warm & humid inside - and were amazed at the varieties of butterflies and moths. I could recognize many of them from my studies of insects and raising butterflies and moths. It was lovely when they landed on you and walked around, exploring this strange new thing. If you ever have a chance, please take time to visit a butterfly house. It's definitely worth the time!
Before I read the description of the spinifex pigeon, I wondered if it was native to Australia. Aussiesapphire answered my question. So, they coo just like any other pigeon. Interesting bird. Odd-looking to Americans but beautiful to another spinifex pigeon. :)
That does not look at all like the pigeons I see around here. It does blend very well with its habitat there, however. Don't think it would blend well into the windowsills on New York skyscrapers! Although that is not where I live that's where I visualize them most.
God bless all of you and take care. Hugs.
