I just did this puzzle in the era of the Covid-19 Pandemic where masks are a safety necessity. I had recently thought when were masks used before this period? Well, robbers use masks and maybe performers, Halloween and ancient performers for Kings and Queens like the Joker. Can you think of any other situations or times?
Masks were often worn in medieval times, usually by the noble classes and of course, during Carnivale in Venice, where they were part of costumes and used to disguise oneself at balls and such - so some illicit affairs and trysts could take place!

Thanks Akan for your reply and brief history reference.
Both pretty and scary. It's wearing a deep frown. You'd need a pretty small nose for it to fit you.
I used to love costume parties. Haven't been to one in decades. Used to make the costumes myself. Don't think I'd want to put in the effort any more.
Wishing you happy events to prepare for.
Pixipixl I bet you made some very imaginative costumes. I never liked dressing up in costumes, didn't feel comfortable. I do find the mask pretty, but I wouldn't wear it. Be safe

Think the most challenging one I made was the skunk costume for a daughter when she was just walking...

When mine was a toddler I made him a penguin one year then Kermit the next. One year he wanted to be Batman so I did that one also. Can't remember anything else worthwhile.
I made myself a rabbit in a hat and won a watch.

I laugh when I think about all of the costumes for school plays and Halloween. One year my young son wanted to be Spiderman - and this was way before any Spidy costumes were available! But we made a terrific one. The next year he wanted to be Han Solo (he was 8 years old - my son, not Han Solo). And there were the gypsies, Draculas, ghoulies, clowns, Quasimodo, and ghosts. With three kids we really made a lot of costumes.
An interesting puzzle. I got a gold mask similar to this one last Halloween. The masks were handed out to the staff who worked at the school lunch room where I worked at. I still have it and hang it on my wall for decoration.
