When I was growing up, we always got a stocking on Christmas morning, and it held an apple, orange, some candies, and walnuts. It was a tradition. My mom told us later, it was her way of keeping us all busy while she got everything ready for the big meal. We had 10 kids in the family, so she had to be pretty creative! lol
Beginning to look a lot like Christmas

started today but didn't get very far
my niece and her husband came and bough a box packed full of cookies
wish I could share with my puzzler friends
You could have eaten one or two for me. I have eaten quite a piece of pie, cookies, brownies, and nuts already. Guess who is going to have to be walking on an exercise treadmill.
PurplePandora We started celebrating on the feast of St. Nicolas on Dec 6th and kept on until Jan 6th, when La Befana would bring us more candy. I always enjoyed the bowl of nuts, a custom that we continued when we came to the United States. What fond memories. My father would put up his home made Presepio with hand cast sheep and a the Three King's castle in the distance, complete with colored cellophane in the windows and a light shining through. He would gather moss and use it for grass and have lakes and bridges, along with the Holy Family, which he bought. It took up half of our kitchen. What wonderful memories. One year he made me a bedroom for my doll. They are all long gone but I have new memories of our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, some nearby and some far away. Hope to be able to enjoy Christmas and Little Christmas for a few more years and most of all, the people I love. Merry Christmas everyone. Hope to make it to Australia some day. I have a friend in Melbourne.
I, too, leave things up until Jan. 6; Seems to me my mother always called it Feast of Little Christmas.

Yup Epiphany, "Little Christmas", the Greek and Russian Orthodox Christmas--and in the Mediterranean world, Three Kings Day--the day the kids traditionally get their presents. Which always seemed hard on them, to me, as they go back to school the next day.
